The Slow Suicide
Not everything harmful is external.
Why are you trying to kill yourself?
"WHOA, what the fuck, man?"
HEAR ME OUT.
If someone were standing on the ledge of a building, threatening to jump, some would watch them. Some would call the police. Some would try to get them to come down.
If someone were eating diabetes-inducing food every day, everyone would just watch them.
Both scenarios involve someone publicly doing something that will get them killed, yet we only care to save the one who would suffer a quicker death.
Why is that?
The answer is a combination of:
Short-term thinking
An "out of sight, out of mind" mentality
Since most people are short-term thinkers, if an action doesn't have an immediate consequence, then it's considered safe. Eating a bunch of trash food doesn't make you fat instantly (ignoring bloating). It doesn't give you diabetes right now. You can change your diet later, right? Of course you will...
In addition to short-term thinking, most people are tolerant to habits that don't look gross or dangerous. Think about all the smokers you know. The habit isn't killing them on the spot. It isn't making them bleed, is it? No, so it's fine. "Out of sight, out of mind," as the saying goes.
While treating yourself in negative ways may not have immediate consequences, rest assured that it will kill you prematurely.
I used to heavily indulge in shit food and pornography. Over time, both of those had terrible effects on my mind (gluttony, fried dopamine receptors) and body (obesity, PIED). I haven't lived like that in quite a while, and I can tell you that I feel more alive than ever before.
Here's what to do:
Note when you do these harmful things to yourself.
Determine and understand what triggers those feelings/situations.
Decide if they're worth a reduced lifespan.
If not, change the habit or remove the trigger.
Keep it going until old age, which you'll now get to experience.
Remember: Not all things that kill you are instant or foreign. Sometimes, you're the culprit, and you're committing an incredibly slow murder (suicide, in this case).
