Counting Streaks Is Weak

Whether it's about drinking, smoking, or jerking.

“Why bother counting to infinity and beyond?”

Me & my homie Buzz Lightyear

I’m sure you’ve heard of Alcoholics Anonymous (it’s for stopping drinking)?

Or NoFap (it’s for stopping jerking off)?

Or whatever ex-smokers do?

If you truly want to quit habits that have a negative impact on your life, that’s awesome, and you’re badass.

Celebrating your persistent efforts is good, but there’s a huge downside to “counting the days,” so to speak:

Constantly keeping that resisted activity on your mind will constantly remind you of it, and that may tempt you.

It also places a large focus on the thing that you claim to have expelled from your life.

If it’s truly out of your life, why care about the streak?

Don’t count your sobriety (or NoFap, etc.) streaks because you’ll just be helping that temptation stay at the top of your mind.

Personally, I don’t believe I’ve ever counted when I stopped being fat or stopped watching porn.

I somewhat remember which period of my life I was in when I decided to commit, but I’ve not been counting the days since then.

If I’m done with those habits, is there a point to counting for the rest of my life?

No.

But what if you were to do that? Well…

  • If you’re 3 years sober, and you’re counting every single day, you’re reminding yourself of drinking every single day.

  • Regardless of whether it’s in a positive context, you’re keeping drinking on your mind, and if it’s always on your mind, it hasn’t truly left your life.

Why stop counting streaks?

Because it gives you a better chance of the streak being infinite.

If you jettison the bad habit out of your mind, it has a chance to truly fade out of your life.

😈 DEVIL’S ADVOCACY 😈

  • “But I want to celebrate because this is a big accomplishment.” (Would you give an ex-heroin addict a syringe-shaped trophy? Probably not.)

  • “It motivates me to never go back.” (Your awesome [bad habit]-free life should be what motivates you to never go back.)

ACTION STEPS:

  • Do what is required to drop the habit.

  • Don’t count the days since you did it.

  • Enjoy your liberated life.

Okay, bye!
