Be Your Own Genie

You don't need Aladdin to free you first.

“To be my own master. Such a thing would be greater than all the magic and all the treasures in the world.”

Genie (Aladdin)

Have you ever wished upon on a star?

Or wanted a magic lamp with a genie to grant your wishes?

Guess what.

You're the genie, and you can grant your own wishes.

There are tons of people who constantly wish:

  • "I wish I were like that."

  • "I wish I had that."

  • "I wish this happened."

Do you know what they actually mean by this?

"I want things to be a certain way, but I don't want to do anything to make that a reality. In fact, I'd really prefer if some magical force could make this desire real because there's no way I'm gonna be the one to take action."

Newsflash: Nobody cares about you, except you.

If you wait for someone else to make you a priority over themselves, you're gonna waste your life and deny your own agency and power.

Once you hit a certain age, you understand that magic isn't real. So, why is it that so many adults still believe that genies are the best option for granting their wishes?

  • Laziness

  • Limiting beliefs

First off, most people just don't want to do things. Period. If people want something, they want to acquire it with the least amount of effort possible. To be honest, that's fair. It's an understandable desire. However, it's not realistic, so what happens is that lazy people rarely get what they want.

Secondly, many people don't believe that they're capable or deserving of their desires. They think their desires are out of their reach because they don't have a specific skill yet.

You can get that skill, but you need to work for it. As the great Vergil once said, "If you want it, then you'll have to take it. But you already knew that."

Some think that their desires are meant for others because they themselves are undeserving.

Who the hell decided that? Some lazy fuck? Ignore them.

If there's a desire, but there's no action, then it's just a wish, but that's okay if you become your own genie.

Here's how it worked for me:

  • “I wish I weren't fat anymore” became an arduous journey that made it so that me getting fat again would be impossible.

  • “I wish I had a higher-paying job” became me committing to learning skills that most people don't know (exercise science/IT).

How do you become your own genie? Like so:

  1. Determine if your wish is an achievable goal.

  2. If so, figure out the process.

  3. Figure out the timeline.

  4. Measure milestones.

  5. Eventually, achieve it, just like any other goal.

Yes, if a wish is reasonable, it's just another goal, so go for it.
